#21 Better Days by Bruce Springsteen

It would be very easy to let forces out of our control dictate how we live our life. There’s a million reasons to “feel sorry for [ourselves]”. This is a hard life. Better Days breathes urgency into the idea of taking the reins of your lifesled. Trying to escape the feeling of futility by waiting for something to give, something to change, will bury your soul a little piece at a time.

While there are so many things we can’t control, we can work at one thing: softening our hearts, allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, because there is something not worth missing, not worth giving up. And that is having someone you “can call [your] friend”.

For those fortunate enough to have someone in their lives that can break through the eye glazing, soul sucking moments of being trapped in mundane work and meaningless pursuits, time is of the essence. Take what you have and do what you can with it. A meaningful relationship is the only thing worth working for and worth saving. It can lighten our load, carry our cross, and bury our burdens. It can keep us from falling into the deep abyss of ache without a lifeline to grab onto. When nothing else seems to matter and ashes upon ashes melt into our soul, only love will have the power to set us on fire once again.
