Springsteen, like in many of his songs, uses the night to set us free, free from expectations, pretense, and our own insecurities and fears. The night allows two people to meet and connect without the spotlight of the complicated past on all our misdeeds and imperfections.
Trying to maintain some semblance of our true selves while trying to find connections with others is a complicated dance. We may find within ourselves so many reasons to feel unlovable. Our past experiences may have caused us so much pain that we’re not willing to take a chance. So, to protect ourselves, we deaden the fire inside of us, not letting the reflection of our souls out to connect with another person.
We’re all looking for that place, the night, where we can be set free of the charade, where we can just find someone to unite with. We torment ourselves with all the reasons not to try, not to look for some deeper, meaningful connection. Like the freedom that the night can provide, we need to free ourselves from the shackles of our own self doubts and worries. Only then will the light within us shine outwardly so that others of like mind and like spirit can follow it down, deep down into our souls where life changing and life saving connections are formed.
